The ancient town of Bargala is located in the eastern part of the Republic of Macedonia, at the foot of the mountain Plačkovica, on the right bank of the Kozjačka Reka, in an area suitable for construction of fortifications, near the former Goren Kozjak in the locality Gradot, 2.5 km south of today's village Dolen Kozjak and 13 km northeast of the city of Stip.
The name of the town Bargala is found for the first time on a found inscription dating from 371, discovered in the locality Hanče in the area of the village Karbinci.
The city in the period from the III century was on the military camp - castrum, until the IV century when it passes from castrum to civitas, and it become the main episcopal seat along the river Bregalnica. It reached its greatest development in the second half of the 5th century when it was the period of the great reconstruction of Bargala. The city existed until the beginning of the 7th century, when the city of Bargala was burned and destroyed by Avar-Slavic attacks.
