Marko’s Towers
Varosh, Prilep
Archeological research has revealed several stages of life, namely:
Eneolithic:
The oldest traces of the use of this area are associated with the time of the late Eneolithic, when a smaller unfortified settlement existed on the upper parts of Markovi Kuli hill, and on the northern slopes of the Chardak hill, the remains of a residential building located inside a smaller cave were discovered.
Bronze Age:
The Early Bronze Age (2500 - 1700 BC) is confirmed by the remains of a necropolis discovered on the southern slopes and at the foot of the hill, more precisely, in the northern part of the Varos settlement. Six cist graves were discovered, fenced and covered with stones or stone slabs. The next stage of the Bronze Age (XV-XIII century BC) is presented by the unique find of a cave grave, discovered at the Svetec site. In that cave-crevice, a grave with a ceramized deceased was discovered, whose remains were placed in a ceramic urn, dug into the ground, supported on the side by stones.
Iron Age:
The Iron Age area of the Mark's Towers is confirmed by fragmented remains discovered on the southern and western segments of the foothills, as well as on the highest parts of the hill. In the eastern segment of the Chardak hill, the unique drawings on a rock were discovered, which according to the stylistic-iconographic peculiarities and the archaeological context date back to the Iron Age.
Classical period:
The classical period (IV century BC) is represented by the remains of the necropolis discovered in the western part of the Markovi Kuli complex, i.e. in the locality of Zagrad. Namely, 36 graves with round-oval and rectangular shapes, different according to their orientation, were excavated in this area. The deceased were cremated.
Hellenistic Age:
In contrast to the fragmentation of the previous stages, the material remains from the Hellenistic period (3rd to the end of the 1st century BC) discovered so far in the Markovi Kuli area enable a basic reconstruction of the appearance of the settlement, and with this period are connects the initial construction of fortification on the upper parts of the hill. The walls of this time were made of rough stones bound with lime mortar.
Roman Time:
In the early Roman period (I-III century), the settlement continued to exist in the southern parts of the Markovi Kuli archaeological complex, which is confirmed by the fragmentarily preserved remains of settlement layers in which parts of vessels and building ceramics, tools, coins, etc. were discovered. The most indicative confirmation of the use of this space in the first centuries of the new era are the large number of discovered pieces of stone plastic, unfortunately, mostly discovered outside their architectural context.
Late Roman times:
The existence of a larger city-type settlement is associated with the late Roman period (end of the 3rd - late 5th century), the remains of which: acropolis, a fortified suburb and an open settlement, were discovered in the upper parts of the hill, as well as in the western, southwestern and southern parts. segments of the archaeological complex.
Late Antiquity:
In Late Antiquity (late 5th - end of 6th century) or at least during most of this period, the further existence of the two basic segments of the mentioned settlement can be traced: the acropolis with a fortified suburb and an unfenced segment of the settlement.
Early Middle Ages:
The findings from the analysis of the cultural layers, especially the intact archaeological layers in the Sred Kuli sector, undoubtedly show that in the early Middle Ages (the end of the 6th/beginning of the 7th - middle of the 9th century) the area of Markovi Kuli was largely abandoned.
Full Middle Ages:
The birth of medieval Prilep, or rather, its proto-urban phase, can be reliably associated with the full Middle Ages, i.e. end of IX/ first decades. Two basic stages can be distinguished in the development of the full medieval Prilep:
- First phase (the end of the IX/first decades of the X to the first decades of the XIII century)
- Second phase (the first decades of the XII to the beginning of the XIII century)
Late Middle Ages:
During the 13th and 14th centuries, Prilep shows typical characteristics of a late medieval city with a particular military-political, cultural and economic significance for the central parts of the Balkan Peninsula. At the same time, three development phases can be distinguished, mutually different according to the distribution, content and layout of the structural elements of the settlement.
- First phase (1204 - 1259) - This phase of the late Middle Ages in the wider Balkan area is marked by the fall of Constantinople under the rule of the Crusaders (1204 - 1261), while in the area of all-faithful Pelagonia it is manifested by intense military activities, which conditions for frequent and short-term wars of the city by Bulgaria, conquest by contenders for the Byzantine throne, etc.
- Second phase (1259 - 1334) - The second late medieval phase is marked by the reconstruction and the attempt to restore the old glory of Byzantium, in which the region of northern Pelagonia has an exceptional role; in the beginning as a place of resolution of internal conflicts, and at the end of this phase Sred Kuli, northern segment 36 as the last point of defense of Byzantium against the destructive power of the expanding Serbian state.
- Third phase (1334 - 1392) - This phase is characterized by intensive economic and cultural development of the urban settlement within the Serbian state and, accordingly, maximum development of the economic segment in the civilian part of the settlement: fair and production units. In accordance with the intense military-political developments connected with the Serbian expansion and later with the defense against the Ottoman conquests, the fortification segment was developed on a necessary late medieval level.
Ottoman period:
After the definitive military conquest of northern Pelagonia in 1392, the settlement spread over the area of the Markovi Kuli cultural complex lost its urban characteristics, and a smaller military crew was stationed on the upper parts of the hill, as is actually recorded in the travel writings of Evlija Celebi. from the 18th century.
