Rotonda
v. Konjuh, municipality of Kratovo
The rotunda was discovered by local residents in 1918. The first archaeological researches were carried out in 1937 by the Belgrade archaeologist Svetozar Radojčić.
The rotunda is one of the few rotundas in Southeast Europe. It belongs to the buildings with a central solution and a dome. It was built in a rectangle, in which the circular base of the central part was inscribed, above which rose a dome. The length of the temple is 23 m, and the width from 7.50 to 14 m. The church was entered from the west side, and from the east side there was an apse, semi-circular on the inside and rectangular on the outside. Between the central partition and the altar space there was an altar partition with six ornamented pillars. A green sandstone pulpit stood in front of the altar. The floor in the presbytery is richly decorated with greenish marble slabs in the opus sectile technique.
On one of the pillars found is the inscription "ΔOMATRIRS", which is interpreted as "DOMUS MARTIRIS", "martyr's house", and it is assumed that the church was dedicated to a martyr.
The rotunda is dated to the time of Justinian (527 – 565) or after him, but it can also be dated to the end of the IV century.
In 1955, the church "Saint John the Baptist" was built on its northwestern part.
